ABOUT

I believe that we are all doing the best that we can with whatever we have, or know, in the moment.  Want to do better?  Okay.  Let's learn how.

I believe in the inherent nature of man to continually seek self-improvement and to create a "life worth living."  Therapy isn't about me giving you the road map or the instructions on how to get there, but it is about you having someone to help you and be with you along the way.

The majority of my work is with children and adolescents and I conduct therapy sessions using a variety of different modalities depending on the client need.  Most frequently, I find cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavior therapy and interpersonal therapy to be the most effective.  I have also been trained specifically in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy which is a separate, evidence-based treatment approach.

Therapy is a journey in which we will identify thought patterns, process past events, plan for the future and problem solve.  At times, therapy can be challenging but it can also be the key to great personal growth.

Outside of the office, my "life worth living" can be found in horseback riding, reading, writing, playing with the cats and dogs, volunteering, enjoying time with friends, and spending time in the mountains.

Experience

In high school and college, I worked extensively with the National Eating Disorders Association, becoming one of the founding members of their Junior Board of Directors.  I also interned at Lenox Hill Hospital.  During graduate school, my internships were at the Birmingham, AL Probation Office, where I taught re-entry classes to inmates that were returning to the community, and at Glenwood Autism and Behavioral Health Center, where I worked alongside one of the therapists.  I was then hired by Glenwood and worked as a primary therapist for teenage boys with severe emotional disturbances.  I gained extensive experience and training in working with trauma, the foster care system, and reactive attachment disorder while there.  I then entered the school system and spent three years working as a Guidance Counselor at John Carroll High School in Birmingham, AL.  Over the years, I have gained experience presenting, teaching, and writing.  I have done assessments, family therapy, group therapy and individual counseling with children and teenagers.
